I wonder why I even bother checking out the weather reports at all. We got none of the weather that was forecasted yesterday. Instead we had high temps (well, for us at this time of year) all day yesterday, above freezing temps over night and . . . no snow.
Here is a glimpse of the raised beds this morning. Good golly, Miss Molly, I see garden soil out there! And even a tinge of green showing on the grass already.
Just for kicks, the above is a shot of the same raised beds on April 9, 2014, nearly four weeks later than today's current date of March 13th. In years when we get a "normal" amount of snow, the raised beds would most likely still be totally under the snow on this date.
Then there are years like this, taken April 19, 2013, when gardening wasn't even on our radar screen! That yardstick is in a drift on our front deck.
But since it does (currently) look as though we just might/maybe have an early spring this year, I put some real effort into getting the planting layout for the field garden done a day or so ago. Between the new strawberries being planted in a new area of the field garden last year and the need to rotate all the crops from last year, I was having trouble getting everything to fit in where I wanted it. But success was finally achieved and now the plans for all the raised beds and the field garden are in place.
Not much sunshine out there so far, but the thermometer is showing 45° in the shade at just about noon as I write this so we're looking for more melting to be on the agenda again today.

Hi Mama Pea! We're in a bit a warm stretch too. Almost 60F yesterday, just under 50F today. We're it the mud-bath phase of spring. Not quite thawed all the way down, but completely thawed on top. Not enough of the spring winds to dry everything out. Slow drizzle all day long and for much of the coming week. Don't forget your boots...
Well, here in PA, it is a bit warmer than past years but we know not to plant until April :-) how wonderful that your gardening plans are working the way you want ;-) blessings....
Mark - That slow drizzle will drive the frost out of the ground at a good pace. Yep, we're still donning our boots every time we go out. Slurp, sluck, muck, ooze and glooze!
mari - I haven't heard of any place in the country that isn't experiencing warmer than usual weather! So strange . . .
Hi Mama Pea, we have a lot of sunshine, in fact, sadly, I got a sunburn today! Was out with the pooches again, then spent a few hours with coffee and fishing magazines on the porch. You never think that you can burn your face in March...out comes the Aloe Vera. On Groundhog Day this year, we had a conundrum in Canada, the Ontario groundhog saw his shadow, the Nova Scotia groundhog didn't...my bf and I will be moving to the Maritimes in 3-4 years to settle down so I opted to believe Nova Scotia's little critter - and I'm glad he seems to be right! Our snow is melting so fast that it's kind of flooding the backyard a little bit. I remember the winter of 2013...the shoveling nearly killed my spirit!
Rain - I mentioned to my hubby yesterday (when the sun was out so brightly) that we should put a couple of chairs out on the deck and get some sun on exposed skin. But he didn't because I know I'd just end up having to shovel around them a time or two yet.
We had to do so little snow shoveling this year it almost didn't seem like winter.
Yay! Snow melting! Hopefully, you'll get that early spring. I planted my garden this afternoon. It's looking like the warm weather is here to stay.
We are mud... everywhere. Yes, the grass is green, but you sink into the dirt underneath it. The cows are up to their knees (they are mini's, but still) and the garden is a pit. Ugh, but since we've been in drought conditions for almost 4 years, this is okay.
I'm thinking weathermen (and women!) hold on to jobs by a thread. Anymore, I just stick my head out the door--if it's not raining or snowing, it's outside we go!
We had 45 and cloudy yesterday and spent the entire day playing pick up sticks. I loved it. You'll be out of snow in another day or so and then the fun begins. Enjoy
:)
Laurie - What did you plant in your garden? Do tell! In a post, maybe?
Ruth Dixon - Good news about enough moisture . . . but there's no condition under which mud is nice! It's spring time on farms and homesteads and mud just seems to be an integral part of the season. But . . . ish!
Sue - So your snow is all gone? Yep, I know we'll be playing a game or two of pick-up sticks as I can see lots of debris out there already. Even more melting showing today . . . I should get another picture.
Don't you wonder how they keep their jobs - those weather forecasters? I think they cover their beehinds with the "chance of rain, clear, windy, mixed" weather. Hope you got to enjoy some of the mild weather!
Mama Pea,
I can ship you some of our weather today. Temperatures to peak 83 degrees. It was beautiful out, I was able to get our grass cut. The first major cut of the season.
Have I told you I don't like weather forecasters?
Susan - A good melting day again today even though we saw no sun. Thank goodness (!) the terrible ice all over our back yard and entry to the house has turned slushy. Still on the slippery side but not like the solid glass surface it's been for most of the winter. Spring IS coming, I just know it is!
Sandy - Did you say 83 degrees? Oh, my. How different our climates are!
I do believe the weather forecasts were better in the old days when the scientists studied weather patterns, wind directions, humidity and such rather than now when they supposedly have so much technological equipment to work with!
