The Urge to Make Some Aprons

I've said over and over that I need to start wearing an apron when I'm in the kitchen 'cause I inevitably get ingredients splattered, splashed or smooshed on my clothing.  I'm not sure I have an "at home" top that doesn't have some sort of little (or large) stain on it from my mishaps while cooking.

But have I gotten into the habit of wearing an apron yet?  Nooooo.  (Yes, as mentioned previously, I really am a slow learner.)

However, a couple of days ago I was given two boxes of fabric to sort through and take any pieces that appealed to me.  I have been so good (SO good, do you hear me?) for the past couple of years in buying very little new fabric, because I have so much in my stash right now that I'll never use it all before I kick the bucket.  (Have you heard the expression among those who quilt and sew, "Whoever dies with the most fabric wins?")

But these boxes were full of really good quality material and since it was FREE . . . well, what's a girl to do?

Aprons.  Oh, yeah.  I was talking about aprons.  Where was I?

I found several pieces of fabric that would be perfect made up into aprons.

I want some aprons that look something like the above.  (I also want a waist that size.)  Ones that provide coverage for my front . . . neck (almost) to knee.  A style that is old-fashioned in a homey, cozy kitchen sort of way.

Here's a sampling of the fabrics I took that said, "Make me into an apron."

This has such an old-timey look to it.

This one, too.  Neither of these two would look soiled right away.  Dark prints.  Good, camouflaging, dark prints.

This one is a chirky little print I really like.

Same for this one.

I like this more subtle print, too.

Yep.  I'm putting "Make Aprons" on my list for this winter.  It would be fun if maybe one of them appeared as a giveaway here on my blog.  Ya never know.  Could happen!

Just as long as you don't post an "Apron Challenge" like a will-not-be-mentioned blogging friend of ours did. Although I DO like your choice in patterns. I can't stand the "BBQ" aprons, it leaves MUCH to be desired....and covered.

And you make them patchwork quilt style too .....

I've gotten 2 aprons over the past 2 years. Gorgeous things, and yea, they're hanging in the utility closet, STILL waiting to be worn. It's a GREAT idea. I just need to use them.............
Can I join your Slow Learners Club?
Don calls me Spot---based on looking at the fronts of every "at-home" shirt I own. Sigh.

Yes! Do a give-away (or two). I could use an apron but I'm too cheap to buy one and I don't have a sewing machine.

I am constantly getting food on my tops too. But if I'm honest, it's because food (and drinks) get on my tops when I eat. Hm....

Do you make bibs?

I'm getting ready to make a 1920's style crossover apron. Knee length, no ties, straps cross over in the back. Just slip over your head. You can make them reversible too!

Carolyn - I hurt my little brain trying to think of something nasty (oops, I mean funny) to say in the post regarding your (oops, I mean our) frustrations surrounding that little apron challenge.

Tombstone Livestock - Right! First I'll piece some fabric in an intricate quilted pattern, all three yards of it, then make it into an apron. Not. ;o)

Sue - Sure is hard for some of us to break bad habits . . . or start new ones, isn't it??

Tami - If I made you a bib, would you wear it? ;o)

Nancy po - Oh, yes! I know that style and really like it, too. Maybe I should look for a pattern for one like that. I also am fond of ones that don't tie around the waist. You know, that teeny-tiny waist that I don't have!

You are such an inspiration to me Mama Pea! One of my major goals when Sam leaves is to set up my sewing machine I bought 3 yrs ago (and still haven't learned to use), and get busy :)

I like your apron idea(s)... pattern and fabrics!!! That 'chirky' fabric almost looks like it could be a 'vintage' textile? All would make great aprons. Can't wait to see what you make. I'd never worn an apron, ever, until I made myself one last year when I began to sew for myself. I hang it in the kitchen pantry on a clothespin (we're real technical 'round here ya' know!), so it's handy to reach for when cooking, and especially canning or preserving food. You will so enjoy your new apron!!! Love the style you've chosen too.

Stephanie - Summer time is a hard time to do much of any handwork (much as we may want to do so!) but getting that sewing machine of yours out and going sounds like a great idea. (At least it's "sit down" work!!)

Lisa - Yes, so much of the fabric I had to chose from looked to be vintage, although I know it wasn't.

You'd better be wearing that apron to protect all the lovely "at home" clothing you've been making!
