A Quilting Day

In celebration of our first really cold, winter day, I stayed inside and quilted for the better part of the day.  (My kinda day!)

What did I work on?  The appliqued wall hanging that I'd like to have ready to hang for the Christmas season right after Thanksgiving.

It was way back in the first week of October that I started this project thinking I'd have plenty of time to get it done for this holiday season.

Ha!

Isn't it funny (so who's laughing?) how the seemingly little, everyday occurrences of life (some planned for, some not) eat up the hours each day so you never seem to end up with that smidge bit of free time you thought you would?

Bottom line, I just haven't had as much time to work on this quilt as I thought I would.  But today I did finally get the pieces for the top completed and put together.  It measures about 32" square.

Next I'll sandwich it with batting and backing and start the quilting.  I really want to hand quilt it which will take much longer than machine quilting but after putting in all the time for the hand work on the applique, hand quilting seems the way to go.

Will I have it done by the deadline I set for myself?  Most likely not.  But that's the way the cookie crumbles.  Life is still good . . . and I'm enjoying the creative process.  It'll get done when it gets done.

Maybe if we have more frigid days soon that are conducive to forgetting that old bugaboo of a To Do List and spending more days in my quilt room . . .

P.S.  So how cold was it here today?  'Twas 4° when I padded out of the bedroom this morning a little after 5 a.m.  Our high of the day was 14° and now at 7:30 p.m. it's back down to 4° and dropping.  Gonna be a cold one tonight!

Mama Pea, it's beautiful! You are truly an artist. Actually, the pattern reminds me of one my great-grandmother did decades ago.

I have to agree about time. There just isn't ever enough.

Oh! That is lovely! I was hoping to have some sewing time today but ended up having to work. But, I was more than willing to pick up the slack at work for a co-worker who's father is critically ill. I've still got time to sew before the holidays.

Beautiful! It's cold here too but not as cold as your temps. I hope it stays cold so you can get your wall hanging finished before Christmas in time to hang and enjoy it.

Looks great, I agree with the hand quilting, so much more personal when it is done by hand. Beautiful.

Wow--you do such beautiful work. What an enjoyable way to spend some time--and you have genuine ART as a result. Purty Purty!!

We ended up with our first big snow yesterday and you know I'm thrilled. As soon as the sun rises (sometime around noon-ha ha!), we'll be hitting the back 20 for some skiing--I'm so happy. FINALLY winter arrives!
Stay warm and so glad you're MAKING the time to quilt.

If I ever do get some quilting lessons, I'll be sure to get tips from you. My gosh, that is beautiful! And for the temperature....I thought 18°F was cold her last night. Yikes! You must be hunkered down in front of your warm fire.

Jen - We were just commenting that November is nearly over! It truly does seem that Halloween and the end of October was just a week ago. The price of being busy and happy, I think!

Aw, gawsh, Leigh! Thank you, but I don't feel I'm an artist by any means. But when it comes to creating something with my hands (which I NEED to do), I happily work at it until I'm satisfied with it. It amazes (and baffles) my husband as I'm impatient in a lot of other ways.

Judy T - Don't we get all kinds of creative ideas before the holiday season? Each year I think I'll start early enough, but then run out of time. You're a very giving person so I know you gladly helped out your co-worker. Here's hoping you and your sewing machine spend some quality time together SOON!

Sparkless - I'm trying to decide today if I should push on it (and possibly create unneeded pressure) or let it go and say I'll have it done for next holiday season. We'll see . . .

Tombstone Livestock - I woke up this morning with ideas in my head for the hand quilting . . . so, yes, it will be hand quilted. Someday. Thanks for the compliment.

Sue - OMG! You got that much snow?? We've not even had a good ground covering yet. The one good thing is that with our cold weather, the pond ice is looking clear and smooth for possibly some ice skating!

Thanks for your nice words! And enjoy playing in the snow!!

Kristina - I'll be more than glad to share any tips I've learned, that's for sure!

Yep, we are definitely putting more wood in the stoves now! Temp this morning was 6° . . . not as cold as I had expected. No sun yet today so far.

I need to finish winter-proofing the farm for our high winter winds and rain that strangely enough hasn't hit us non-stop yet, then I have a goals in mind. One of which is the crocheted blanket I've been doing for years... Your wall hanging is beautiful!
