Just Ain't Right . . .

Here we are nearing the middle of January and we are severely lacking snow cover which is much needed moisture for our soil.

We just got back from taking one of our Suburbans about 20 miles down the road to our mechanic for a tune-up and work.  On the way home, I snapped this picture along the highway showing how barren the ground is.

In a normal year (if there is a normal year any more), we would have a couple of feet of snow accumulated on the ground at this time.  Our temps have been in the 30s during the day.  You'd never know this is northern Minnesota.

What is the winter weather like for all of you in your location?  Has it been what it should be so far?  Or are you also experiencing whacky winter weather, too?

It is seriously wacky here. They are forecasting 50 degrees and RAIN for Sunday. What?!? I am sure that will be followed by flash freezing and ice on everything. Geez.

So far a little over 3 inches of rain, which weatherman says that's 100% of normal so far. Sun is out today and it is warmer outside than in the house. Supposed to get down into the 20's this weekend with a chance of snow down to 1500 ft. If predictions are true I will be posting pictures of snow on the mountain across the road, but not here at 450 ft. Just enjoying my sheep having green grass.

Every since January hit we've been getting snow on and off. I'd say we have about a foot or more now on the ground. It's snowing a bit today too. It's supposed to warm up and rain tomorrow. It's been a bit warmer winter with little snow all through Dec, mostly rain. Each year we get less and less snow and more rain.

Today is almost 60 and it just started raining (thank goodness) I think this winter is colder than last year, well not today ☺ Just lacking in the moisture department like you. We've had a drought here for the last two years with a total of 30 inches below normal for those years combined, that's pretty bad!

I think the northwest got all your snow!

Warm here today, I think almost 60 degrees. A bit warmer than normal, but nothing too crazy. Except for the lack of moisture, of course.

And I like it how you just casually say "a couple feet of snow". They'd have to call out the National Guard if that happened here!

We had snow but it has warmed up the past two days and it has melted away. I have uncovered my hoop houses and I think some of the plants survived even though we got down to single digits at night.

It is a freakish 49 degrees here at 5:00 PM. I really want more snow - lots of it. But it is nice not to have to chop quite as much firewood...

Way down here in Texas we are battling wam weather and flooding. It truly has been a wacky winter.

No snow here in NC where I am. At most, I guess they get 6-8" in a winter. We have been getting a lot of rain though. At least once a week, which will help the water table. It's been cold the last week or so, but is supposed to be high 60's and actually hit 70 on Sunday.

It's just crazy I tell ya! W are generally cold and snowy this time of year also. Today we have rain due and temps into the 60's called for and possibly 70 by the weekend. We will be hip deep in skeeter, ticks and chiggers this summer 8-/

that's awful for you, I just saw on the news some northern area (walked in late) in the Northeast has now gone 310 days without snow and talking about the effects it is going to have this spring, very sad. We had frost on the cars the past few days but will be 70 tomorrow.. what is that all about?!!

We are supposed to be in the 70s this weekend, which is not average for this time of year in my parts.

We've had MAYBE 3" of snow since Thanksgiving and today it is supposed to get up to about 40F. I'd be enjoying the lack of snow shoveling if I wasn't wondering how this was going to affect farming and next summer :(

Susan - Many folks in "cold" climates like us always seem to rejoice when we get mid-winter thaws. Don't they realize that always makes for ice, ice, ICE? Gosh, I hate ice.

judy - Ya know, the way the weather has been so whacky, I wouldn't be too surprised to have it reach 85 one of these days in January! (Ooops, bite my tongue!)

Tombstone Livestock - What a huge relief that must be for you (and your sheep!) to have the green grass! Wishing you enough rain all winter (and summer) to keep things better than they have been for you.

Mama Pea said...

Sparkless - Yep, each year less and less snow . . . but we're not getting the rain unfortunately either.

Your foot or more of snow on the ground sounds good to us right now!

Kelly - Eeeek! 30" below normal IS pretty bad. Even though we're short on moisture, it's not that severe. Seems a lot of the country is in drought conditions. What's going on?

Mama Pea said...

Carolyn - Geez, 60 degrees is a "high" night time temp for us in the summer!

Be careful of what you speak . . . the way the weather has been going, you're probably more likely to get a couple of feet of snow than we are!!!

2 Tramps - Isn't it amazing what a thin covering can do to protect your plants? I'd say hoop houses are well worth their expense in your area.

With our day time temps in the 30s, even we aren't going through as much firewood as we normally would this time of year. And it's our only source of heat since we took the L.P. gas heater out of the basement this year. We only used it when we were going to be gone but still it was handy to have.

Mama Pea said...

Simply Scaife Family - Flooding?! Oh, gosh. There are so many parts of the country (like us) that would welcome some of your moisture. (You'd no doubt be glad to send it on, too!)

Mama Pea said...

Stephanie - Wipe that big smile off your face! I know how much you hated the snow and cold and are loving the part of the country you're now in. Enjoy, enjoy!

Mama Pea said...

Katidids - I know! I was so hoping for a frigid winter to kill off some of the awful biting insects and garden pests we've been battling the last couple of years! Well, maybe there's still hope yet . . . ??

Mama Pea said...

Erin - Well, there has been talk that our weird weather isn't all natural. Hmmm . . . .

Mama Pea said...

The Weekend Homesteader - On the whole, doesn't it seem that most parts of the country are having a warmer winter than usual? Easier for getting around but bad for the evil insect population!

Mama Pea said...

Jen - Yes, we have noticed the time we HAVEN'T had to spend in snow removal so far this winter. On the other hand, I always consider that my good (huffing and puffing and sweating) exercise this time of year!

Down here in the big state of Texas we are getting alot of rain.I was watching the weather channel and El Paso has had more snow than up in Chicago weird uh?

Annnightflyer - Mother Nature just can't seem to spread out the moisture in an even manner, can she? Seems all the snow the past couple of years has gone south of us up here near the Canadian border. Not right. Just not right.
