I'm Predicting An Early Winter

So far today we've had glorious sunshine, stiff wind, hail and snow.  At the moment we're back to sunshine, but if I blather on here long enough, it will probably change again.

The temperature is hovering around 40 degrees so none of the snow or hail lasted long after hitting the ground.

How strong has the wind been?

Right before lunch I glanced out into the garden and saw the top of one of our cold frames lying open behind the frame at a funny angle.  The frame tops are secured with hinges on one side and a bungie fastener on the other side which is hooked into two eye hooks.  The wind not only snapped the bungie but pulled one of the eye hooks out of the wood frame.

Boy, did I get a kink thrown in my energetic list about which I blogged yesterday.  Other than cleaning the bathroom, not a blasted thing got crossed off.  How is it that you can keep moving all day long, but at the end of the day you've accomplished so little of what you planned on getting done?  Yep, the business of "life" does get in the way often times.

And time keeps flying by way too fast.  I just noticed that the cottage cheese I'm making is ready for the next state of processing.  That means I started it two hours ago.  Where did those two hours go?  Or the tidbit that our daughter shared this morning:  She recently bumped into the father of a high school girlfriend and he commented that this is his daughter's twentieth year of teaching.  It seems that this gal and our daughter graduated from college just about five years ago.  Where did those twenty years go?

Anybody else see time zipping by?  Are you, too, getting frustrated waiting until you "have time" to do things you want to do that repeatedly get pushed to the bottom of your list?

Well, if we do indeed have an early winter this year, I'm all for it.  Will I make this the winter I spend whole days snuggled under a quilt on the couch reading?  Or have as much time as I've dreamed of in my quilt room?  Or waking to a day I can spend in any way I wish without thought to the passing hours?

Here's a quote by Lao Tzu that brought me up short and caused me to mutter, "Whoa!"

"Time is a created thing.  To say 'I don't have time'
is to say 'I don't want to.'"

Do you believe that?  Do you think that statement is true?

Ah I think that quote is spot on. It really is a perspective thing. I think of when I lived in the city and thought I was 'so busy'. What the hell was I doing that I thought THAT was busy? Now that I do everything by hand I realize how that really was a figment of my imagination:)

That is so true, simple distractions have a way of eating up a lot of time during a 24 hour period. I am a really big procratinator lately.

That's my life most days. I m not sure I believe the phrase because time is defined by daylight a lot of times and it does run out.

I love that quote! Unfortunately, I don't live by it but I love it.

Oh ya, I so believe that quote. People I know are always using the excuse that they are too busy so they don't have to do something they don't want to. I don't know why they just can't say they don't want to instead of acting like being busy means they are really important and indispensable.
I can't believe you have snow already! We are still waiting for the first flakes.

We all, have all the hours there are. What we choose to do with those hours shows who we are.

That's a quote from way back in the days when I was working, raising 2 sons alone, and volunteering with their Boy Scout troop, and finding time for all of it. I wouldn't have traded those hours working with the youth and watching them grow for anything in the world, but these days, when we're living close to the land are wonderful. I'm so grateful to be retired and have time to grow and cook and enjoy life more. Yes, each day gets filled, each hour, each minute, but it's in the way I choose. And that's wonderful.

These days, we fly all day long as we're getting ready for winter too, and have our firewood stacked, root cellars filled and canning mostly done. Why am I still so busy? Well, there are all those green tomatoes to do something with, and today I'm watching the grandson, need to get out and pick apples and...... It never ends, thank God!

Time is flying by..I can't believe my youngest will graduate in two years..that it is October already.. that I am 40. I found a card the other day that said "I don't know if life is trying to pass me by or run me over." Sure did give me a good laugh:)

Time is flying by for me, my girls are growing up too quickly and I can't believe the holidays are upon us!!!! I think the quote is true since my kitchen is rarely clean and that's because I like to cook but I don't like to do dishes ☺

i fail to get my lists of To Do things done so much that it is embarrassing.

I do believe the quote. I know I waste a good deal of time......if you consider sitting on your fanny reading a waste......I don't.

I have adopted to new attitude about how I spend my time. I have decided that I have earned the right to do what I want to do and try not to feel too guilty about things I am leaving undone.

The older you get, the faster time flies. I think when you are raising kids, you often "don't have time" for some things especially if one (or both!!!) of the kids gets sick or has a project due (tomorrow!!!) or takes piano lessons (oh my poor ears!!!)or plays a sport (dinner on the go!!!) or ..... But as we get older that quote might be closer to true. Plus we are in such a "right now" society that too many people want something done "right now" when in reality, it will take several days or perhaps weeks or even years to complete it. Perhaps we just need to take on your alias and all call ourselves "The Queen of DeNile"!!! hehehe

Yes and yes! I agree with all that you have said, and time is moving much too quickly!

Jane - The reverse of this, of course, is that everyone has the same exact amount of seconds, minutes and hours each day. It's all in what we do with them that makes our lives different!

Mama Pea said...

Tombstone Livestock - There are times when I'm absolutely sure I could easily fill day after day WITHOUT doing any move ahead projects or starting anything new whether it be labeled "work" or "recreation." Just the business of living can fill a day. (Hmmmm. Maybe if I stopped cooking. And eating. And showering. And talking with people who pop by.) ;o}

Mama Pea said...

Lisa - Ha! ". . . time is defined by daylight a lot of times . . ." Spoken like a true homesteader. There are just somethings that shouldn't be attempted after dark! (Danger, danger!)

Mama Pea said...

DFW - I'm still thinking about it. Really thinking about it. If it IS true, I've been doing a pretty darn good job of fooling myself!

Mama Pea said...

Sparkless - A pet peeve of mine is people who use "being too busy" as an excuse for irresponsibility. "I was so busy I forgot to get back to you." "I've been so busy I just couldn't get it done." "I'm too busy to cook for the family." Yep, we all know them!

Mama Pea said...

judy - You've got so much going on in your everyday life that it's no wonder your time goes by lickety-split!

Mama Pea said...

Trailshome - I'd say you, m'dear, are very well adjusted! Who wants it to end when we're doing what we want to do?

Mama Pea said...

Simply Scaife Family - With the life you're living, I don't think you can say life is passing you by. (But there sure are those days when we all feel a little run over!)

Mama Pea said...

Kelly - Doing dishes is my very least favorite household chore. But because of that, I can't stand to have dirty dishes piled up. I'd rather do 5 small batches every day than two huge batches. (I think I use reverse psychology on myself, but it works!)

Mama Pea said...

gld - You get sooooo much done in a days time that you must be making unrealistic lists. (Hmmm, unrealistic lists . . . I can relate to that.)

I am sincerely striving to shed the guilt I have about never accomplishing enough in a day's time. Working hard hasn't been a problem for me (well, in has in some ways) but learning to get enough R & R is!

Mama Pea said...

Karen L. - I think when raising a family and getting your home established, we women tend to do everything else except make time for ourselves. So when our other responsibilities do lessen with time, it's hard to relearn (or maybe learn for the first time!) how to take care of ourselves!

Mama Pea said...

Erin - Got any ideas how to slow it down?

Dirt Lover said...

Oh, I have a family member that is always saying she has no time to do things, but that I have more time than she does. I always wondered about that, since we both have the same exact 24 hours!
Recently, I've been trying to be nice to myself, and do more things for me. Its a hard thing to learn.

Lori - I simply cannot tolerate the gall of a person who passes judgement on someone else like that. How does she know what you really do in a day's time. For heaven's sake, you could be a CIA operative working out of your home! (A little stretch of the imagination perhaps, but you know what I mean.)

When you've got it down (how to be nice to yourself), would you please do a post on it? So many of us females didn't learn how to do that growing up and then having a husband and family just pushed us farther toward martyrdom!!! (And that ain't necessarily a good state to be in!)
