We got another storm late this afternoon. Boy howdy, did it ever get dark! Long about 4:30, after listening to distant thunder for a couple of hours, the rains came with a vengeance. Our luck held, however, and even though we were warned to expect damaging hail again, the hail apparently wore itself all out farther to the west of us. All we got were winds and heavy rain. When all was said and done, the rain gauge showed 3/4 of an inch.
I knew the garden could use a good soaking today but after getting knocked wonky from too much heat and sun yesterday, I stayed in all day and tried not to think about the garden.
So the late afternoon rain storm was welcomed and appreciated. We're still under another severe storm watch until middle of the night . . . up until about 3 a.m. they say.
The temperature is finally dropping. It's a lovely 62 degrees (gosh, that feels down right chilly) outside.
With the help of our big garage exhaust fan . . .
. . . and by opening first this door . . .
. . . and then this door, we've got it down to 70 inside. Methinks I'll finally sleep better tonight. (The fan in the garage is doing such a good job of sucking the hot air out of the house, I've almost lost the bandana tied around my hair twice now!)
Tomorrow? Back up into the low 90s. With this afternoon's rain, at least now the garden will be in better shape to handle that. Hope the rain is finding those of you that still need it. We sure are grateful we're getting as much as we are.
P.S. Thunder boomers have just started again. Maybe we will get more rain tonight.

Glad you got some rain, personally I could live without the thunder and lightning. I just read "Go West" Feral Woman's post about making it thru the fire alive, but no info on property or livestock casualities, so sad that so many parts of the country are under seige from weather or disasters when this should be a day of celebration.
Up in the middle of the night ,I'll pretend I can hear your thunderstorm, that should lull me back to sleep, can't wait to get out own and a cool down tonight
Tombstone Livestock - The threat of fire always looms large when so many of us are going through drought or near-drought conditions. Living in heavily forested land as we do, forest fire is a real and frequently present danger. The whole world seems to be in a period of natural disasters. We can only hope circumstances take a turn for the better soon.
judy - I know your area has been having almost unbearable heat. I hope you get some relief very soon.
Been rough down here too...making it's way to 104 again today...and not a drop of rain in sight for another week or more...
Don't know if the garden is going to survive it..praying, crossing fingers, knocking wood...lol
Heading o0ut to pick green beans and water. Our water bill is going to be skyhigh, but we may save the gardens.
Akannie - Our temp is lower today but it feels like the humidity is at about 96%! Just came back in from weeding and at first it even felt a little (these days that's a relative word!) cool, but the minute I started moving, that old humidity made it feel uncomfortable.
Sending good wishes that your garden holds on until enough rain arrives.
62 degrees! I would need a parka if it ever got that 'cold' here. I am glad you got some rain. We got another storm in the night last night but it was all hail. Guess who has some holes in the greenhouse and a bunch of broken plants. Sigh. When is fall?
We've got heat and humidity, too. There were
'strong' storms predicted for Tuesday night and yesterday and all we got was a small amount of quiet rain and a breeze. Just enough to blow the humidity around my head. Along with the skeeters. This summer stuff is starting to get to me. Hold onto your bandana!
Jane - The hail actually made holes in your greenhouse? Oh, dang and drat! You sure didn't need to be patching a greenhouse in your awful hot weather. Hope not too many plants were damaged beyond bouncing back. I can't believe all the bad stuff you're having to deal with this year. So, so sorry. :o(
Susan - Yeah, our mosquitoes have come out, too. Gets us to thinking about our deck replacement next year. We have to replace the existing deck and I want to roof over and screen that part in so we would have a breezy, bugless place to sit (sleep?) outside in the summer. If we win the lottery, I'd build another portion of deck out beyond that so we could have a sunny place to lounge (lounge? what the heck does that mean?) in spring and fall.
There is nothing, NOTHING better than that big temperature drop before/during a storm moving through! I just cooled off a bit in my mind thinking about it bahahaha!
We sure could use some rain! My garden is absolutely parched! But I'm glad at least someone is getting some.
Erin - True. As long as the storm doesn't bring damaging hail and/or winds! Bad storms still scare me all these years after getting up close and personal with tornadoes in Illinois.
The Weekend Homesteader - So many gardens are parched and dying right now. I do almost feel guilty talking about our rain when not everyone is getting it. Hope some heads your way soon.
I am so behind on my blog commenting. Yea for rain without damage!
We have been so spoiled out west with truly nice weather. But the heat is headed our way this weekend. Time to get the fans out of the attic - especially one for Chucky, our yellow lab - he doesn't like the heat - neither do I! Hope you have started to cool down there. The rain had to be wonderful but the lightning storms not so great...
LindaCO - Yep, I was more than happy to miss the hail. It can really tear apart a garden. Just ask Jane over at Hard Work Homestead! :o(
2 Tramps - I'm so glad to hear from someone who has actually been having a good summer weather-wise! Seems most of us aren't. Today was not nearly as warm as it has been. Do ya think we could be done with the hot-as-hades weather?
