Inside Work

It's been pouring rain outside since last Monday so we've been putting our energy and effort on working in the living room for most of the week.

We finished laying the flooring late yesterday but I was too tired to get a post together last night.

Several spots in the floor were not level and this was the worst of them. We had leveling goop left over from doing the kitchen floor and thought it would be enough for the job. It wasn't. So this was the first application which sat over night until we could get more material.

Getting this stuff mixed up properly and then leveled out on the floor before it turned to cement was a bit of a horror story that I know Papa Pea doesn't want to recall any time soon.

Papa Pea getting "down to work." Hahahaha!

We can see the light at the end of the tunnel here. The flooring is a wood laminate "floating" floor and now that it's done, we're very happy with it. However, I just want to go on record as saying the installation was not as easy as we were lead to believe and if Carpenter B hadn't been available to share her tricks of the trade and contribute a lot of hard work, we may have made a mess of it.

This is the little step-up landing that leads into my quilt room (straight ahead and currently stuffed with furniture from the living room) and to the stairs on the left up to Papa Pea's office.

This was taken while I was standing on the landing looking the other direction across the living room and toward the door into the kitchen.

Today is clear of rain but very windy. The forecast is for several more days of rain starting tomorrow. So I have to make the choice of going out into the garden and doing what I can in the way of damage control there (we got upwards of 3" of rain total) or setting up outside the garage to paint some trim and poly baseboards for the living room. Decisions, decisions. Keeps life from being dull and boring. Also makes one yearn for a week of rest and relaxation far, far away from it all!

Oh, I wish SOME of that rain could have made it over here. The sand (soil-haha) is like dust. We can't seem to BUY a drop of rain. Clouds appear, but the atmosphere is so dry--the weatherman says it is evaporating before it falls. Sigh.
Looks like you're really moving along. I guess some indoor days was needed. Now quit hogging all the rain !
:D

Oohhhhhh that is looking very nice. You two are doing a great job. Can I hire you to come do my house?

I was very interested that you used the leveling compound on your uneven floor. We discussed using it in the kitchen, but the original floor has so many cracks and holes that we didn't think it would work. :) Yours is looking super, good job.

I know you said Papa Pea wouldn't want to relive the flooring, but I have to say, it is really looking so good. I am in love with everything you are doing with this room, and am taking notes for future reference :)

Looks fantastic, Mama Pea! I would *love* to have those floors. :) Have a nice weekend. Hope you get some sunshine!

Ok, I may have to ask about the leveling compound nightmare as it looks as if we may have to use a LOT of that stuff in order to get our living room floor leveled out to put laminate flooring in. Papa Pea willing to share some tips or is it just too traumatic?

Sue - Now that we've got enough moisture (but still more forecast), it's been kinda chilly so I'm wondering if I should wait for it to warm up before plunging little seeds and seedlings into that cold, wet soil. If it ain't one thing . . .

Sparkless - We'd gladly come help you . . . except neither of us LIKES doing remodeling which puts us in a mell of a hess for this whole project, doesn't it? I guess we're both just too stubborn to quit. On the other hand, if we could afford it, I'd have the crew of 12 in here to do it in a nano-second!

Leigh - Thanks for the kind words, Leigh. I'm sure there are many ways to go with an unlevel floor. B suggested this to us and although the job wasn't as extensive on our kitchen floor, we knew it did work.

Stephanie - Thanks! I still don't have the "feel" of how the flooring is really going to look as I can't put any furniture back in there until we get the baseboard trim installed. There's too much of the "warehouse" (okay, a very small warehouse) look to the flooring right now.

Mooberry Farmwife - We've never had a laminate flooring before but it has a 25 year guarantee so we're hopeful it will be just fine over the long run.

CR - Sure, we'll share what info we have. I'll get an e-mail off to you as soon as I can with the details. Don't want to mention brand names here. :o}

judy - Getting outside and taking a hike is a really good way to "clear your head." Breathing in the fresh air can't hurt any either. You keep doing what you have to do, Missy.

MP, the room is looking fantastic!!! Once it is actually finished and you have had a few days (weeks, months???) to sit in it, you will be glad you did all that work. And yeah, nothing ever turns out to be easier or even the same as the directions indicate. I hate that and can commiserate with you. Hope you can take Memorial Day off for some "me" time and relaxation. Everybody needs a day off now and then, even you guys ... or perhaps I should say especially you guys as you have been overworking yourselves. But I suppose that's what keeps you young .... or lets you know where all the aches and pains are? hehehe

PS: Forgot to mention how beautiful your new header photo is. I may just leave that up on my screen all day.

Karen L. - Thanks for the compliments and good wishes. Oh, I know this is all going to be worth it when it's finished. When my "new" kitchen isn't piled full of non-kitchen furniture and building supplies, I appreciated and like it so much. So I know it will be the same with the living room when it's finally done.

I wanted a new header photo so went out late yesterday afternoon to get some shots of our apple trees that are in full blossom right now. I was pleased with that shot I used, too. Thanks!

Looking great! Personally, I hate putting in flooring. Give me drywall anyday! I think it has something to do with the postures required for flooring that always make it seem even harder than it really is.
We finally got a little rain last night. All of those storm fronts that have passed through always seem to miss us by a little bit, or the line breaks and passes on either side of us. With all the rain we got at the very beginning of the month, we're officially only about 2 inches behind for the month but these last three weeks or so have been really dry.
And I agree, your new header photo is lovely!

It is looking very good!! Your getting so close. It looks like Papa Pea had a few too many holiday libations in that photo. You guys celebrating early ;)

Judy - Flooring is hard on the knees, for sure. Although I can't say I like doing drywall either! Guess I'm just not crazy about remodeling, although I'm a darned good painter so I don't mind that.

You're so much farther ahead on your gardening season than we are so I know you really need more rain. We're forecasted to get another gully-washer tonight/all day tomorrow so I held off planting seeds today for fear they'd get rearranged by the heavy rain. Boy, if we could only even things out like rain, sun, wind . . . !

Jane - I think he was about to START embibing while trying to cut off that little bit of door jamb so the flooring would fit under it!

Love your new header photo! I bet your place is pretty dressed in apple blossoms. We put in a floating floor in our M. Bdrm. a few years ago and you are right... it's a killer on the knees, back, etc. Yours looks GREAT!

Lisa - Thanks for the kind words regarding my new header photo and the flooring. If all goes well, looks like we'll have a good apple crop this year. And with the 25 year warranty on the floor, we may come out on that, too!
