Back earlier this summer, we asked Chicken Mama what she would like for her birthday this year. Her reply came quickly and succinctly. She knew exactly what she wanted. Okay, sounds good to us, we said. She provided the needed info and we sent in the order.
Although we thought the order was placed in time for arrival for her special day of July 5th, it didn't arrive until this week. She's been home at Swamp River Ridge for her days off this week since the arrival of the package so it's still here waiting for her.
Now for the fun part. She suggested I do a blog post asking if any of you would care to hazard a guess as to what her birthday present is.
To give you an idea of the size of the box, here I am standing next to it on our porch. (Bad mommy that I am, I'm not going to wrap it before she gets here. What you see is what she'll get to open!)
Here are a few hints as to what might be in the package:
1) It's bigger than a bread box.
2) There are no air holes in the box so it's nothing alive.
3) Chicken Mama has one of these in her house but she says she needs many more.
4) It was handmade after the order was placed.
5) It is something you might possibly see in Europe more than in the U.S.
Chicken Mama is offering a set of her beautiful photographic note cards to the answer we deem the "best." And I'll throw in two of my quilted pot holders for the second best. Your entry can be funny or serious. Of course, if somebody hits it on the head, you are the weiner!!
Leave your guess in my comments section by this coming Saturday at 6 p.m. We'll look through all entries then and post the winner by Sunday, the 14th. Good luck and have fun! (Hee-hee!)

I am putting on my thinking cap, so look out!
Susan, I think I smell smoke.
Yuk, yuk. ;)
Mom, I wonder if we should include a picture illustrating its width . . . or is that easily enough seen in the picture?
I'm going to guess a drying rack. I love birthdays that get celebrated for weeks!
I have no idea what it could be, but now I have a feeling I might need one. See what you did !
It's a CooCoo Clock! That way she gets up on time!!!
Ms. Apple Pie, pppppbbbbtt! Besides, that would be a pretty HUGE cuckoo clock!
Oh, this is tough. But when I think of Europe, I think of custom made feather beds. The fact that she needs many more could be one for every bedroom? You do love to challenge us!
Chicken Mama - I think the picture gives enough of an idea of the size of the box. ('Course, I suppose we could mention I'm only 3'10" tall and weigh 76 pounds. Hahahaha!)
Your answers are all great, gals. Keep 'em comin'!
I'm thinking too big to be another mosquito canopy, so I'm going with an electric blanket!
A handmade rocking chair?
DARN AND HERE I WAS GONNA SAY BREAD BOX---THIS IS SO MUCH FUN----HA,A NEW LAWN MOWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's right, Chicken Mama, I'm a smokin! Heehee. Is it a livesized voodoo doll in the spittin image of a certain someone? No? Sorry, I have voodoo on the mind.
The only thing I can think of is some kind of chair but those aren't more common in Europe than in the US.
I think - trays for her dehydrator. And if it isn't - it should be.
Everybody - You're doing great! Keep it up. Such a conundrum!! ;o}
how 'bout a washstand/washbasin?!
A rug?
I'm guessing a had made rug, since we all know how much Chicken Mama loves vacuuming them. ;)
I can't wait to find out what it is!
Oops! I guess I didn't read far enough. odiie already said that. Ummm...I still think it's a rug.
ok, how about a weaving loom? not sure how many of those you need but good a guess as any.
TinaH
Maybe a quilt holder?
I wanted to a say a bidet because its the only thing I can think of that would be European but not a home made one my other answer would be wrong to unless you know superman,to HOME MAKE A LAWN MOWER BUT I suppose anything is possible-how many tries do we get - I think I used mine!
Hmmm. There are a lot of tools that can be custom-made and a woman homesteader would certainly benefit from something made-to-order, but from the size of the box I wanted to guess, "chainsaw" and they ain't exactly handmade! My next guess would be a sauerkraut crock, but the box doesn't look right for that either. Guess I'm just gonna have to come back and guess again later!
CM, don't you blow raspberries at me! I wanted to say it was Sven from Svweeeden, but she said no air holes! Oh well, sometimes they are better not breathing... :oD
Hmm, fireplace end irons & Tools?
I'm thinking her home has multi fireplace's and that box is the right size.
APG,Its Ole,I'm sure,CM is really Lena [ her secret identity ] ,you don't need air holes ,you just blow him up. its a big box cuz Ole is a big man!
I was thinking scythe (though the box doesn't look like the one either of our two came in). They're custome made and common in Europe. OTOH, it's not exactly the kind of thing one keeps a lot of around the house!
Leigh-- you obviously haven't seen MY house... ;-) My first guess would have been a scythe, because I DO have a custom-made one, but the box is too wide for that. I'm inclined to go with LindaCO-- one can never have too many drying racks!
I got it! It's a garden gnome, 'specially made to lurk around on the deck outside and scare off that pesky raccoon! She'll need more to protect the chickens in the future.
Or! Maybe it's a specially opening door for the dogs to go outside at night and not let the mosquitoes in. She'll need more so that each dog can have his very own door to use!
Did I get it right?
To All You Guessers - I can't believe all the directions your minds are going on this one! Great work with your thinking caps on. Time's running out . . . you still have time to get in a second guess if you want . . . !
I know - it must be a Snuggie, emblazened with the British flag. I know you already have one, Chicken Mama ...
