Perfect Timing

Papa Pea and I pushed for a couple of hours yesterday to get the first cover crops sown in the pumpkin patch and twelve of our raised beds.

We knew rain was in the forecast for the rest of the weekend (NOT perfect timing for holiday weekend revelers) so getting the plots ready and planted sounded like the wise thing to do.

Yes, it was very cool again yesterday as witnessed by the multi-layered look being sported by the planter gentleman above.

Do you think Martha Stewart does it this way?

So has the rain started? Yup. We woke this morning to gently falling rain which is great for the newly seeded plots. Not so great for potato chips, hot dog and hamburger buns and picnic blankets which may get a little soggy in the next couple of days.

Martha Stewart can't hold a candle to you! I'm sweating from working in the garden and I must admit it was kind of refreshing seeing Papa Pea in his layers! Hubby and Finn are building me a long skinny raised bed with scrap along the fence so I can plant my pumpkins right now, I snuck away! It's 90 and crazy humid sticky and the bugs are coming out and the skies are approaching gray & black... how's that for a mental warm you up image LOL?! So now I know... when we get there I'm going to make sure one of the first projects is a greenhouse/sunporch thing with a woodstove in it so we can host a Memorial Day "Indoor" picnic, checked tablecloths and all :)

Erin - Call me crazy, but I'd take our current weather over yours any time! I grew up in heat and humidity but simply cannot tolerate it anymore.

Your idea for a place to have Memorial Day get-togethers is genius. You have no idea how many Memorial Day picnics we have had on the beach dressed in down jackets, hats and, yes, the occasional pair of gloves. As adults sat by the (big) fire after dark sipping and talking, kids ended up asleep about two feet from the fire rolled up in blankets while snuggled together. The weather we're currently having isn't that unusual up here.

If I were gardening this year, I'd have cold frames over most of my raised beds and seeds would be growing. IF I'm ever fortunate enough to have a bona fide greenhouse, we've had enough sun that things in there would be flourishing. A hoop house out in the field garden would do it, too.

It can be done up here, we just have to work at it a little differently. But I'll gladly do it to avoid 90 degree humidity!

How Martha does it, is she has a staff of 50 people who are always ready to clean up, throw down, or polish her mud boots at any given moment at any of her four estates. Who wouldnt like to have that? Plus the millions of dollars.

Martha has someone do it for her... LOL she poses for the picture with a pea seed and trowel in hand and then hands it to her "lacky". LOL Our weather is forecast to be rain all weekend. So many people around here went camping this weekend and I admit, I'm getting old. I wouldn't do it for love nor money(well, maybe money)! Lyndsey and I may sleep out in the greenhouse this weekend and enjoy the sound of the outdoors... I always bundle up and then get too warm and have to put the layers down on the fence.

I told hubby all about the weather and asked if he was still up for it, he didn't bat an eye, just said "oh, yes!"... we hate the heat too!

Jane - Can you IMAGINE what you and/or I could do with the staff and $$$ she has??

Ruth - I've been thinking out on our deck some night (as soon as it warms up!) before the bugs get bad. Hope you and Lyndsey get a chance to do your greenhouse overnight this weekend!

Erin - One word: WA-HOOOO! Cannot wait!

Ruth - Oh good grief! My mind is obviously going faster than my fingers. Or is it the other way around??

What I meant to say is that I've been thinking OF SLEEPING out on our deck . . . :o\

I can't believe I get a 4th chance to comment. I'm either in such a rush or to many mistakes. My daughter says "why don't you look up once in a while when you type" jeepers ,why didn't I THINK OF THAT!Happy Memorial Day . and there sure are a lot of people that don't think much of Martha Steward [ including me] you'd think she was Leona Helmsley, but send me her helpers anyway. Try to stay out of the sun this week-end [ha]

judy - Poor Martha. I just don't think she's a very warm person. She kinda puts me off for some reason. But I don't wanna bad mouth her. She's done okay for herself, hasn't she? She could certainly be called more of a success story than moi! But . . . is she happy?

Ah, Martha wouldn't make it in the real world anymore. Besides, she couldn't hold a candle to you. I think I would rather have your weather, too. Did I just say that??? It's in the low 90s here, hot and humid - with threats of storms, but no rain for the last 4 days.

Susan - Could Martha have EVER have made it in the REAL world? I dunno. Maybe she's tougher than I think. But then again, we farm/homesteady-type gals have to be physically strong and that's something you have to do all the time to keep those muscles ready, willing and able.
