I'm going to a baby shower this coming Sunday. In with the invitation was a short list of suggested items needed and/or wanted by the new mama. One item was a sweater.
Perfect! My fingers have been itching to knit for a while now so I jumped on this idea immediately. I knew the pattern I would use, and I had yarn for it. Well, turns out the yarn wasn't exactly the same as that called for, but I thought it would work.
The sweater is nearly finished, but I'm just not sure if I'll wrap it up as my gift for the shower . . . or not. You see, the measurements of the sweater are a little bigger than the pattern indicated (did I mention my yarn wasn't exactly the same as that called for?). Truth to tell, it looks like it might fit a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers. Okay, it's not THAT big and the little Bundle of Joy could probably wear it next winter, but it is gonna look SO BIG for her right now.
I could give her these two little hats I have made up. And maybe a receiving blanket I could put together with some soft flannel I have.
When Bundle of Joy was born two weeks ago, I was honored to be invited to the hospital to meet her when she was just hours old. At that time I took the baby quilt I had made for her. (Even that looked big enough to cover about eight babies her size!)
But I know newborns grow faster than weeds . . . so maybe she would grow into the sweater before she's sixteen.
Back to my needles and yarn. I'll stop trying to make a decision right now and wait to see what it looks like when I'm all done.
HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A JOYOUS NEW YEAR'S EVE . . . BE SAFE!
P.S. I'm having trouble with my e-mail so if you've sent me a message and haven't heard back from me, don't think I'm ignoring you. I'm just having trouble accessing messages and sending new ones out. My computer tech (daughter) is coming later today to troubleshoot.

I like that little hat on the left...
I love the hats, too, but I think the hat on the left is definitely more The Peanut, don't you? NOT that the Bundle of Joy wouldn't love it, but it's kinda whacky . . . like The Peanut! ;) Also, they have TONS of blankets / receiving blankets. (Sorry.) Grandma J (who was just here but has since returned to Kansas) was telling me that the quilt you made . . . which lines her crib . . . is so perfect because there are so many designs and animals for her to look at . . . which they think she already is. :)
I would still go with the sweater. Maybe pin a cute note to it saying something like, "This didn't come out right! Maybe she'll fit into it when she's 3 years old?" Besides, I know that kids get WAY more use out of something bigger that they can wear before it properly "fits" vs. something that they'll quickly outgrow.
But . . . go with your gut! :) xo
Hi, Mama JJ - Thanks! It is the cutest thing on a little head! Not 'cause I made it but because it's such a cute pattern. The ruffled bottom gives a definite little girlie/pixie look to it. (A little boy couldn't wear it without getting some funny looks!)
Chicken Mama - Okay, so scratch the receiving blanket. Sigh. Both of the hats are quite small. The Peanut's head is already too big for both of them.
I know you're so right about Bundle of Joy outgrowing a "newborn" sized sweater (in about a week) but since New Mama put it on her list, I thought it was something she really wanted for use now. Like I said, I'm gonna stop agonizing over the sweater until it's completely done and then try to look at it with objective eyes.
I think the sweater would be fine even if it's too big! My mom made a fleece square about 18" square, with "tags" or ribbon pieces sewn all around it and it was one of the most loved pieces my kids had, we called it "taggie blankie"! I will try to find it and take a picture of it but maybe you have seen them at stores. That would be neat too if she loves looking at different patterns! And love the hat on the left too!
Hi, Erin - I finished the sweater tonight ('cept for sewing on the buttons) and I think it's a go. I'll post a picture of it tomorrow.
I'm fascinated by the "taggie blankie" and would love to see a picture of it, if it's not too much trouble. I don't think I've seen anything like that.
